Siemens Corporation Blade Plant - 2008 Expansion

PSBA worked in conjunction with the General Contractor on a significant addition to and remodeling of the existing Siemens facility in Fort Madison, Iowa. This work included office space as well as production space.

The office facility, upon completion of remodeling and additions, contained 74 offices both “enclosed” and “workstations.” The office spaces were grouped into six different departments, each of which had various needs and requirements. Additional office space of 2,000 square feet, plus a large locker room of approximately 9,000 square feet were completed.

The design and construction effort was extensive with four areas to be significantly remodeled:

  • a remodeled office area and addition totalling approximately 11,600 square feet,
  • new canteen / lunch room area of approximately 8,000 square feet,
  • mechanical and electrical space of approximately 8,330 square feet, and
  • conversion of the former canteen into office space of approximately 4,000 square feet.

In total, the office facility now comprises approximately 36,275 square feet.

The factory produces state-of-the-art, wind turbine blades which vary in size from 45 to 49 meters in length. The total production area after the remodeling is 469,400 square feet, 40% of which was new construction.

The total area occupied by the offices and the factory space is approximately 505,700 square feet. The building itself has the equivalent of 11.6 acres under roof and is located on a site of approximately 120 acres.

Development of the site was as complex as the building remodeling and additions.

  • An abandoned railroad spur which previously serviced the site was replaced. The new, multi-track spur involved extensive earthwork and elevation adjustment of a major inter-state pipe line,
  • Due to the large size and flatness of the factory site, drainage was an issue which had to be dealt with.

This was a fast track design / build undertaking. Team members were physically located in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Denmark. Meetings were held both on-site and by tele-conferencing. While these additions and remodeling were taking place, production continued.
